The Land Rover was conceived but the Rover company in 1947. The success of the American Jeep and the proven value of a 4 wheel drive vehicle of rugged contruction during WWII inspired the Wilkes brothers to build a British version. Launched in 1948 customers were never in short supply and once the British Army embraced it as the vehicle of their choice the Land Rover's place in motoring Hall of fame was secured.
